MODEL NEWS

Here is some news, which may be of interest to those of you who collect models. Along with the usual massive output of models from many manufacturers, Volkswagens are well represented, as can be expected there are many variations of the VW Beetle, the Split Screen Van and of course the New Beetle.
This time though there are a few unusual releases, which can make life a bit more interesting for the specialist VW enthusiast, especially for those who feel that their VW has been neglected by the model makers.
Many VW vehicles have been ignored for many years. But recently the German manufacturer Minichamps is starting to address the balance.
Recently they have been releasing models of current vehicles such as the MK4 Golf, Lupo and the New Beetle, along side this, they have also been making excellent models of the Beetle and Split Screen Van.
This has been further improved by Limited Edition releases of some of the less frequently modelled cars. These include the Mk1 Polo and Scirocco, the Type 3 in all three variants (couldn't resist that), the Trekker and the Karmann Ghia.
This year, proposed releases in the older VW range include two models of the Type 4. A 411LE 4 door in blue, and a 411 LE Variant in green. Plus new colours for the Scirocco and Polo (both in yellow), the Karmann Ghia in turquoise and the Trekker in olive green (military)
All these models are in the very popular 1/43 scale. That's about 3 ins or 9 cm long for a Beetle.
The most surprising releases however are in 1/18th scale. That makes a Beetle about 9in or 23cm long. Minichamps are proposing to release all three variations of the 1969 - 74 Type 3 in this large scale.
This should be very interesting especially considering the amount of detail contained in their 1/43-scale models.
Not to be outdone, Revell, who make some excellent models are bringing out a couple of interesting models in 1/18th scale towards the back end of the year. A Microbus Concept in Red and Blue and the W12 Coupe in Metallic Orange/Red, and Yellow
Also keep an eye out at your local Woolworth's for a few specials from Matchbox. This year is their 50th year of production and they, have released some special Anniversary models, including a few VW's. First up is the 1962 VW Beetle `Ragtop' in a special both Anniversary box. The model is in Lime Green with Matchbox logos and lots of number 50's in various colours and sizes on it. Priced about 99p. Next is another 1962 Ragtop Beetle, but this time on a carded blister pack with 50th Anniversary logos. The quality of this model is far superior. It has to be at £4.99 a time for the same model. The colour is burgundy with a beige sunroof. Matchbox `50 year' logo on the engine lid. All the `chrome' detailing is highlighted, including door handles, window trim and quarter lights. It also has chrome plated `VW' wheels and bumpers with Goodyear tyres, complete with tread details. It even has its own display stand. Thirdly is the 1967 VW Transporter. Once again all the detailing is excellent and is to the same standard as the Beetle. Colour is burgundy. All the chrome is highlighted, and it comes with chrome wheels, the bumpers are cream with `chrome' rub strips, the price is £4.99. Which is a bit expensive, but considering the extent of the detailing and the fact that they are Limited Editions, they are well worth adding to your collection.
