Killigarth Manor Holiday Park Polperro, Cornwall.

By Matthew Mulvale

By Matthew Mulvale Just over the border from Devon into Cornwall there is Looe and Polperro. Polperro is a beautiful little fishing village with twisty, winding, narrow streets and quaint little ’Olde English Shoppes.’ A very popular destination for many tourists, as they flock to see true Cornwall. The journey into Polperro, takes you down a steep slope, and then one large car park which takes all visitors. Then a long but beautiful walk, takes you through the village, to the other end where the harbour is. The scenery is breathtaking, and the tiny little Cornish streets fascinating. Killigarth Manor Holiday Park, is situated at the top of the steep slope that leads down into the village.

The site is owned and run by ‘JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAY PARKS’, who owns a number of sites in the South West. We were very pleased at how well the site is laid out. All pitches are flat and fairly large. There are two toilet blocks, one ‘posh’ one with showers etc, and one ‘basic’ with just toilets and sinks. Both were very clean and tidy and well kept. On site there is an abundance of facilities. Most pitches have Electric Hook Up, there is an excellent (if pricey) shop, a pub / club and entertainment venue, Take-Away food, Swimming Pool (heated), kiddies play areas, amusements including Snooker / Pool, fitness suite, Tennis Courts and lots of other things that I can’t remember. The staff are all very friendly and easy going, and the entertainment in the club on the evenings is really good. There are kiddie clubs too, for the Toddlers which I seem to remember being called the ‘Foxy Club.’

The site is quite well situated for touring South East Cornwall. Looe is quite near, as is Fowey and Mevagissy. Back over into Devon, and there’s Plymouth and Dartmoor. It’s quite easy to find the site too, as it’s quite well signposted. To find Polperro, you’ll have to use the M5 South, all the way to the end, and then the A38 which takes you most of the way there. Then it’s just a case of following the signs to Looe / Polperro. From where we are in the West Midlands, it took us about 5 hours with a stop for drinks and toilets. I think it was about 230 miles or so, but obviously this will vary, depending on where you’re going from. In conclusion, we had a really nice holiday there, and would go to that site again.

I will admit, it’s geared up for kids, and is an ‘active’ site, with lots of stuff going on. If it’s a quiet and tranquil time you’re after, maybe this isn’t for you. But if you’ve got young children, they’ll love it. We went a couple of years ago, and it was Easter, so very packed out. However, this didn’t hamper the holiday at all. You could just stay on the site for the duration of the holiday, as there’s so much to do, but then of course, you wouldn’t see much of the beautiful place they call Cornwall.

In 2005, it was about £11.00 per night to stay at Killigarth. Electric hook up was included in that. I’m sure it will have gone up by now, so it’ll be worth phoning to find out the costs.
