Netherdale Camp Site is in the North of Somerset, and fairly close to Cheddar and Weston Super Mare. It’s only 15 minutes from M5 Junction 21 and close to the A38. There’s nothing immediately around the campsite, except for a family pub / restaurant, and a longer drive is required to fetch provisions etc. We used this site a couple of years ago, when we wanted to visit Bath for the day. We also spent a day in Cheddar, which is just a few miles down the road.We actually came across this site by accident, as we had intended to use a much bigger site called “Broadway House”. However, on arrival at Broadway House, we went to check in, but were told by the miserable humourless individual, that we were not permitted to stay 2 nights only 3, as it was Easter ! Bemused, perplexed and annoyed, I promptly explained where they could shove their weekend and got back into the car. Having driven a few miles further up the road, we came across Netherdale.
For anyone that has never been to Cheddar Gorge, this really is a ‘must see’. It’s quite possibly one of the prettiest little villages in the UK. The are some Caves that must be explored when visiting Cheddar, and although expensive, they are really excellent and fascinating. Further away, there is the City of Bath which is a very beautiful City, and very historic. The architecture is breathtaking and the whole place has a very Roman flavour. The Roman Baths are truly magnificent and have been preserved for thousands of years. Really well worth a visit, but again quite pricey. There is also the city of Wells to visit and of course good old Weston Super Mare, which is always great for a day out.
Netherdale Campsite to be honest was fairly basic, but everything that was needed was there. It’s a quiet site, with no shop, no clubhouse, no pub, and no swimming pool. ‘Electric Hook Up’ is available, but would have to be booked as not every pitch has it. The toilets were immaculately clean and tidy, but were very old type constructions as were the showers and washing facilities. However, this did not detract from the weekend we had, as we were not that bothered. The site is fairly level depending on where you’re situated and where we were was just fine. The owners were very friendly and helpful and extremely cheerful, even though we arrived at about 8am and got him out of bed ! There are some Static Caravans on this site too, but I’m not sure if these were privately owned or rented out. There was a main road which passed right by the site and I seem to remember hearing cars go past, but this noise wasn’t intrusive. The site is quite open plan, and there seemed to be plenty of room. The grass was closely mown and the site was very clean and tidy.
I think we probably would stay here again if we were down that way. However, if you’re looking for an active family site, you’re looking in the wrong place. If you want a quiet peaceful relaxing site, this would be just fine.
I can’t remember exactly how much we paid. It was a couple of years ago, but it was less than £20 for the 2 nights we stayed. It has more than likely gone up now though, and as always will vary depending on when you go. For an up to date price, phone them or visit their website.
